‘The bearer of this letter of mine… asks you to kindly recommend him to someone who could be of help to him’
The famous Hebrew poet Judah ha-Levi, native of Toledo, Spain, wrote this request for charity from the Egyptian Jewish community. Two lots of money are sought: to help pay a woman’s ransom, and to help the bearer of the letter, who has fallen on hard times, having lost his means, his eyesight and his health.
