Ben Ezra Synagogue

The Ben Ezra Synagogue is located in the old Fortress of Babylon, in the heart of Fustat. Fustat was the first Islamic capital of Egypt.  When the modern capital Cairo was founded by the Fatimids in 969 CE it eventually absorbed Fustat. Today the area is known as Old Cairo or Coptic Cairo and is famous for its ancient churches, mosques and the Ben Ezra Synagogue.
