This note written on an odd scrap of parchment was sent home with a schoolboy, Abu l-Hasan. A boy in his class, with the same name, conspired to break his writing board. Jewish children did not sit at desks, but used a wooden board balanced on their knees, much as traditional Jewish scribes still use.
