Hardback notebook
3 May 1967–19 October 1972
MS Add.10038/1/3; f. 74v
This larger-format hardback notebook was mainly used by Riley for fair copies of poems which he may at the time have regarded as finished, although many of the texts it contains bear marks of subsequent revision. This page is the first of five in which Part I of Czargrad was written out in a version very close to its final form (although the quotation in lines 5–7, ‘Ich hätte viel geschrieben denn ich hätte viele Gedanken gehabt und Erinnerungen von Vielen’, from Rilke’s Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge, which appeared in the first published version of this part, was removed from later printings).
