A silver binding

Philipp Kegel
Zwolff geistliche Andachten: darinnen gar schöne trostreiche Gebet begriffen…
[Nuremberg, 1644]
Rel.e.64.10

This book of ‘twelve sacred devotions’ is housed in a beautifully engraved silver binding of the eighteenth century, a sure sign of the wealth of its owner. The raised bands on the spine echo those found on leather bindings, and the delicate clasps hold the book together. Each cover carries an engraved scene along with a devotional verse: on the upper cover a shipwreck and on the lower a man sowing seeds. This precious object was probably given to the Library early in the twentieth century by one of its staff, F. T. K. Caröe.
