The passage to which both Tegetmeier and Chance were responding can be seen in Darwin’s discussion of the secondary sexual characteristics of humans. Darwin relied on his own observations in England and his network of correspondents around the world to conclude that there were ‘no exceptions to the rule’ that beard hair was ‘invariably of a lighter tint’ than scalp hair.
