Monument to Capt. Cook, Kealakekua Bay, Sandwich Islands
London; New York: Ward, Lock, and Co., 1889
1889.9.192 (opposite p. 1113)
This popular edition of Cook’s voyages published in fifteen parts in 1889 bears witness to the enduring fascination for Cook’s voyages of discovery, more than 100 years after his death in Hawaii. The sailor and the Hawaiian contemplate the monument together; Europeans and Hawaiians are reconciled, whilst the depiction of the monument to Cook on the site of his demise associates his death with a distant ancient history.
