Principal design: transverse perspectival section showing east façade of Divinity School

Competition drawing
C.R. Cockerell and assistants, 1829
Pencil and wash. 84×31
MS Add.9272/4/10

Cockerell won the first competition to design the library and schools with a set of presentation drawings of which this is one. It shows the architect’s characteristic hybrid of section and perspective view: the functional essentials of the design are shown, but we can also see how the library interiors will be articulated, how light will fill the spaces, and what view will confront the visitor on passing through into the courtyard.
