Sketch for east elevation with towers

Pencil study
C.R. Cockerell, 1835
Pencil. 63×15
MS Add.9272/4/35

This drawing represents a ‘study’, as Cockerell annotated the corresponding plan: it is completely conceived as a design, but not worked up into a finished drawing. The draughtsmanship is characteristic of Cockerell’s own hand, busy with pentimenti, vigorously defined with light and shade, and full of energetic detail. The paper has been extended so that the neighbouring chapel of King’s College can be included.
