East façade elevation

Sketch drawing
C.R. Cockerell, 1836
Pencil on tracing paper mounted, lines carrying onto mount. 71×34
MS Add.9272/4/50

This drawing is a rare visual record of the architect’s mind at work. Cockerell has drawn the enneastyle portico and elevations behind, complete with ornamental scheme, then tested out the visual effect of various articulations for the attic storey above. Balustrades, belvederes, and two different placements of a pediment have been rejected and are still visible as ghosts on the page. Finally, however, he has settled on a row of windows with a bracketed cornice.
