Gutenberg’s revolution

The ‘Gutenberg Bible’
Mainz: Johann Gutenberg and Johann Fust, ca 1455

The first substantive work to be printed in Western Europe using movable type, Gutenberg’s revolutionary Bible lit the fuse of an explosion of printing, which enabled ideas to be spread across Europe and around the world with previously unimaginable speed. Lines of Thought will examine the ways in which people have communicated their ideas and preserved them, beginning in 2000BCE and extending to tweets written while the exhibition is present: visitors will help to form their own line of thought into the future. #ulLinesofThought
